KYHT - Keeping Your Head Together

Sydney West Area Health Service

Abstract

'Keeping Your Head Together' (KYHT) is a project which aims to reduce the mental health problems associated with substance use by young people.

Currently there is public and professional concern about the link between substance use by young people, and the early onset of mental health problems. Research suggests a correlation between alcohol and other drug use by young people, and negative mental health outcomes.

A review of relevant Australian health promotion activity showed that very little had been done in the area of co-morbidity prevention. The Drug and Alcohol Network Population Health Team commenced development of a prevention strategy in late 2005.

The outcome is a unique project with strategies including development of print resources, a targeted board game, professional development training initiatives and a comprehensive media strategy.

This project was entered in the 2007 NSW Health Awards, Primary Health and Continuing Care in the Community category.
