Healthy Weight Strategy

Sydney West Area Health Service

Abstract

The SWAHS Healthy Weight Strategy operationalises the strategic direction to make prevention everybody's business. It provides a framework and governance structure for progressing strategies to address overweight and obesity in the area. The collaborative strategy includes multiple internal and external partners and is strongly supported by the AHS Chief Executive. Workshops, major stakeholder interviews and surveys have defined agreed directions and immediate actions. The Centre for Population Health coordinates the strategy focusing on priority settings and populations and policies.

Key outcomes to-date include an AHS Healthy Food & Drink Choices Framework, extensive child care sector needs assessment, family healthy weight program for locational disadvantaged/Aboriginal people, Health Impact Assessment providing recommendations for addressing obesogenic environments, 'Sip & Crunch' program in schools, addressing healthier food choices in sporting organisations and implementation of the breast feeding policy.

This project was entered in the 2007 NSW Health Awards, Making Prevention Everybody's Business category.
