Caring for Moulamein and District Families through community engagement, responsiveness and collaboration
Greater Southern Area Health Service
Abstract
Moulamein is the second furthermost town in the Lower Western Cluster in Greater Southern Area Health Service (GSAHS). In 2006, Moulamein town and district continued to experience the hardships of ongoing drought as well as losing two of its residents in separate tragic accidents.
Community Health staff conducted a survey to ascertain community needs and, after prioritising, the overwhelming responses were for access to education in mental health and men’s health.
In consultation with management, consumers, a tireless volunteer ladies committee, The Department of Primary Industry, the Centre for Advancement of Men's Health, local service clubs and businesses, three highly successful events were organised. A Mental Health First Aid Course, Family Night and Fellas' Only night all had maximum attendances.
This project was entered in the 2007 NSW Health Awards, Making Prevention Everybody's Business category.
