Speak Up

The Joint Commission has developed the Speak Up initiative, which encourages patients to take a more active role in their care:

Speak up
Pay attention
Educate
Ask
Know

Use
Participate

Hospitals in North America are encouraging their patients to speak up if they have concerns or questions regarding their health care.

Through the Speak Up initiative patients are able to:

  • understand their diagnoses and access their own quality of care
  • understand and provide input into their  care plans,
  • understand common medical errors
  • raising concerns when care seems to deviate from explained/expected plans or protocols.

Brochures and posters supporting the Speak Up initiative are available to download from the Joint Commission website.  These resources are free to use, with acknowledgment of the source.
