Surgery Futures - Greater Newcastle
NSW Surgical Services Taskforce and Hunter New England Local Health District
Overview
The Surgery Futures - Greater Newcastle project provides a framework for Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) management for the development of public sector surgery (both elective and emergency) in Greater Newcastle over the next 5-10 years.
The Surgery Futures - Greater Newcastle report (
pdf - 649 KB) has provided a number of recommendations that will require a partnership between clinicians, HNELHD management, facility General Managers, professional associations and the NSW Ministry of Health. It is envisioned that the partnership will create sustainable surgical services in Greater Newcastle.
For the purposes of the Greater Newcastle Surgery Futures project, it is assumed that Greater Newcastle facilities included are:
- John Hunter Hospital (JHH) including
- Royal Newcastle Centre (RNC) and
- John Hunter Children's Hospital (JHCH)
- Belmont Hospital
- Calvary Mater Newcastle (CMN)
JHH is the major tertiary referral centre for HNELHD, the Mid North Coast and Northern New South Wales. It is important to recognise that Greater Newcastle does not operate in isolation. For planning surgical services Maitland Hospital should also be considered because of its relative proximity and close working relationship as part of Greater Newcastle.
Surgical services in Newcastle include all the major surgical specialties. There are more than 110 practising specialists in the Newcastle area. Specialist training is provided in the majority of surgical specialties. The hospitals in Greater Newcastle form the main hub for hospital based medical student training for the Joint Medical Program of the University of Newcastle and the University of New England. In Years 4 and 5, more than 70% of the 200+ students in each year participate in the program in Greater Newcastle.
