Welcome to the May 2009 edition of ARCHI Net News
It's been another busy month at ARCHI with our work spread over a number of aspects of care. The events team have been active in chronic care for Aboriginal people and mental health redesign. We also have some new content for involving patients in their care, and improving Emergency Departments.
Happy reading from the ARCHI Team!
In this issue...
Practical Steps to Improving Emergency Department Signage
Emergency Departments (EDs) are frequently the main point of access to hospital for many patients. All ED signage should be prominent, concise and give clear easily identified guidance to everyone using the ED.
This guide describes how to evaluate and improve signage in the ED.
2nd Annual Chronic Care for Aboriginal People Development State Forum - NSW Health
Across the state, the Chronic Care for Aboriginal People program team has been working on the state-wide solutions together with staff at an Area level. The aims are:
- to provide information and updates in Aboriginal chronic care initiatives from a range of health agencies.
- to improve the health outcomes for Aboriginal people with or at risk of developing a chronic disease.
The presentations describe the progress of the NSW state initiatives, as well as other Aboriginal chronic care programs.
Speak Up - The Joint Commission
The Joint Commission has developed the Speak Up initiative, which encourages patients to take a more active role in their care:
Speak up, Pay attention, Educate,
Ask, Know, Use, Participate
This is a new addition to our Patient and Carer Experience Solution Library.
Project RED (Re-Engineered Discharge) - Boston Hospital
The Project RED (Re-Engineered Discharge) program run at the Boston University Medical Center focuses on:
- patient-centred education
- discharge planning
- post-discharge reinforcement
The program recreates the discharge process to improve the process and post-discharge care.
This is a new addition to our Patient and Carer Experience Solution Library.
Mental Health Clinical Services Redesign Workshop
The workshop focused on sharing the key learnings, tools and resources that have contributed to understanding challenges facing the mental health care system in NSW.
It looked at ways to address those challenges through appropriate, effective initiatives within the Emergency Department, Inpatient and Community settings.
Can You Help?
ARCHI runs an enquiry service for members, where we tap into the fabulous resource that is the knowledge, expertise and experience of our membership. Below are our current questions:
- Is anyone working on, or have resources for palliative care education specifically for generalist rural nurses (i.e. who work in facilities very remote from specialist palliative care teams)?
- Does anyone have any screening tools used by GPs or GP programs to detect metabolic syndrome in patients ar risk?
If you can help, or want to ask a question of your own, contact Catherine Knight, ARCHI Content Support Manager, admin@archi.net.au Phone: (02) 4926 7992.
