Nursing Highlights
New ARCHI Content
Ward Activity and Nursing Display (WAND)
The WAND tool provides nurses and ward staff with a visual snapshot of current bed occupancy in their ward, as well as details of pending patient admissions and discharges and a list of nursing staff.
This helps nurses and ward staff to:
- Manage ward-based flow, quality and safety issues
- Plan for expected patients from the emergency department
- Proactively plan patient discharge
- Align workforce with patient load
On-line Clinical Education in Nursing (OCLEN)
On-line Clinical Education in Nursing (OLCEN) combines the latest multi-media technology with contemporary approaches to health service teaching.
OLCEN is a new hospital-based service of 80+ hours of on-line lecture materials, a chat forum/discussion board, nursing taxonomies and selected web links providing for a new post-graduate cancer nursing program.
Workforce Roles
Job descriptions and roles that support new models of care including:
- Cardiac Liaison Nurse
- Ambulance Release Nurse
- Emergency Department Nurse Practitioner
Decision Making in Clinical Practice
The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) have developed a national framework for decision making.
The national framework consists of two parts. The first is a set of principles that form the foundation for the development and evaluation of decision-making tools. The second contains two templates for decision-making tools, one for nursing (registered and enrolled nurses) and one for midwifery, in recognition of the differences between the two professions.
Leeton District Hospital Midwifery Training Program
Leeton District Hospital developed a midwifery training program in partnership with Charles Sturt University Wagga and Griffith/Wagga Base Hospitals to address a critical shortage of midwives in the town. There are now two locally trained midwives on staff with one student currently training.
As a direct result of this initiative, the Leeton Maternity services have developed and progressed to offering new services that are women-focused in line with current trends.
