Welcome to the September 2009 edition of ARCHI Net News
September is the month for standardising clinical handover across the NSW health system – ARCHI brings you the key principles involved and support resources for implementation of these standard practices.
Patient experiences are also being improved through the NSW Health Patient Survey and NSCCAHS' BreastScreen NSW consumer service program.
Happy reading from the ARCHI Team!

Clinical Handover Project
Clinical handover is the effective … "transfer of professional responsibility and accountability for some or all aspects of care for a patient, or group of patients, to another person or professional group on a temporary or permanent basis."
This NSW Health project developed the key principles that must be standard for all scenarios of clinical handover in the NSW health system, and supporting implementation resources.
Planning Ahead in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities
The Planning Ahead in CALD Communities resources, developed by the Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care, are designed to assist key individuals to introduce the concepts of planning ahead to their clients, their client's families or to someone else that they trust.
The research identified that older people from CALD backgrounds found certain key individuals such as community leaders, priests, bi-lingual doctors, solicitors, accountants and aged care workers to be the most trusted source of information on the most important issues that affect their lives.
BreastScreen NSW Service within Northern Sydney Central Coast Health
The BreastScreen NSW service within Northern Sydney Central Coast Health maintains an ongoing consumer service program that monitors the experiences of clients who attend for screening and assessment.
The purpose of this program is to continually improve the service provided to our clients as, if this population based breast cancer screening program is to be a success, it is essential that women are willing to continue to attend screening on a regular basis for many years.
Solutions: Improving Patient and Carer Experience
The NSW Health Patient Survey has been developed to gain information about patients' experiences of health services so we can understand where and how we need to improve.
The Solutions Library aims to link improvement programs to the aspects of care measured in the Survey.
The following measures have been added to the Solutions Library:
- Availability of (Other) Healthcare Professionals
- Doctors and Nurses Acknowledged Your Experiences / Suggestions in Caring for Your Child
- Given Information Regarding Patient's Rights and Responsibilities
- Got Information About Caring for Your Baby
- Healthcare Professionals Considered Family / Living Situation in Treatment Plan
- Informed About Therapy Exercise Before Going Home
- Treated with Respect / Dignity During Stay
- Waited Too Long to Get Tests / Test Results
We welcome your contributions to the Solution Library.
Can You Help?
ARCHI runs an enquiry service for members, where we tap into the fabulous resource that is the knowledge, expertise and experience of our membership. Below are our current questions:
- Has anyone been involved in a website creation that delivers mental health education, support and guidance to generalist staff in the general hospital?
- Has anyone been involved in creating a community market garden as a health promotion tool?
If you can help, or want to ask a question of your own, contact Catherine Knight, ARCHI Resource Coordinator and Analyst, admin@archi.net.au Phone: 02 4926 7992.
