Coomealla Community Midwifery Outreach Program
The Coomealla Health Aboriginal Corporation (CHAC) addressed the lack of sustained continuity in care, often noted in main stream services, by indigenous women.
They specifically addressed missed appointments and reasons for, education and reduction in risk taking behaviours, importance of ante/post natal care, thus ensuring a more positive outcome for both mothers and babies at birth.
Boomerangs Parenting Program
Sydney South West Area Health Service developed the Boomerangs Parenting Program to provide culturally appropriate camps/ workshops that improve positive parenting outcomes.
The program involved 20 sessions, including 2 camps. The camps provided a variety of supports including therapies, parent/ child/ infant interactional guidance, family games, fathering business and mothering business, self care, baby massage, books binding families, parent craft advice, children's games and playing as a family.
Shake A Leg Health Promotion Program
Hunter New England Area Health Service developed Shake A Leg. It is a schools-based health promotion program for both primary and secondary schools which is delivered to all students with an indigenous perspective.
The program has resulted in significant changes in the students attitudes towards looking after their health and ensure they educate and inform their family and extended family members.
Aboriginal Child Health Check Program
The Aboriginal Child Health Check Program was developed in response to the poor attendance rate of young people at the doctors and was a joint venture between Coomealla Health Aboriginal Corporation, Coomealla High School, and Dareton Primary School.
The program provides comprehensive health assessments/screening of all primary school aged children in Dareton.
Mister Germ Hygiene and Nutrition Program
The North Coast Area Health Service implemented the Mister Germ program.
The Mister Germ Program provides resources and trains teachers to implement a sustainable hygiene and nutrition program in their pre-school that will lower the risk of disease transmission.
Hunter New England Aboriginal Employment Strategy
Hunter New England Health’s (HNE Health) Aboriginal Employment Strategy has positively contributed to significantly increasing employment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees.
The objectives developed for the program fall under 4 main goals: Recruitment, Retention, Career Development, and Cultural Respect and Safety.
Murr-roo-ma Dhun-barn 'To Make Strong'
Justice Health developed this program as a positive and culturally effective approach to 'Close the Gap' in chronic conditions for Aboriginal peoples who are in contact with the criminal justice system.
It targets the most significant and treatable chronic conditions for Aboriginal peoples relating to cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, cancer and the most at risk lifestyle factor of smoking.
Bugl Booyay – Good Breathing Respiratory Program
The local health providers, Dharah Gibinj and North Coast Area Health Service have collaborated to develop a suite of services that address the respiratory needs of their Aboriginal community.
The program aims to:
- increase awareness of lung disease in the local Aboriginal population.
- prevent smoking related chronic respiratory disease.
- improve health outcomes for Aboriginal people with respiratory disease.
