This month we are pleased to bring you a wide variety of articles on innovations from new nursing skills in cardiology care in South Australia, to Interprofessional learning in the ACT to Medical Assessment Units in New South Wales.

Nurse Supervised Exercise Stress Tests

Medical staff workload was identified as one of the causes for delay of exercise stress tests (EST) for cardiac patients at Flinders Medical Centre (FMC).

FMC addressed this problem by developing training for cardiac trained nurses to perform exercise stress tests.

The program resulted in:

  • decreased length of stay
  • increased staff satisfaction
  • increased patient satisfaction
  • improved service efficiency.

ACT Health Interprofessional Learning Project

Judy Stone has provided an update on the ACT Health Interprofessional Learning Project. The progress includes:

  • auditing the ACT health services and tertiary education institutions
  • developing interprofessional learning opportunities
  • developing Australia's first health service interprofessional policy, and
  • planning workshops by esteemed interprofessional educators from the UK.

Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) Physician & Nursing Lead Forum

Professor Peter Castaldi (Chair Physicians Taskforce) in association with NSW Health Redesign held a Physician and Nursing lead Forum on 31st July 2008.

Over 40 Physicians and Nurses from the hospitals that have and will be implementing MAUs attended and discussed issues and identify solutions that have arisen when implementing MAUs.

NSW Health Expo

The 3rd NSW Health Expo is being held on Friday 31st October.
