The Victorian Orthopaedic Waiting List (OWL) Project and State-wide Implementation

The Victorian Department of Human Services (DHS) Statewide Elective Surgery Program has supported the University of Melbourne Centre for Rheumatic Diseases (CRD) at the Royal Melbourne Hospital to develop an orthopaedic surgical prioritisation tool and service delivery model for management of osteoarthritis patients in public hospitals.

The main initial aim of the project was to generate a system to improve the equitable and timely provision of joint replacement.

Report by Richard Osborne.

Evaluating Best Practice Compliance Using Discharge Summaries

The team at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Osborne Park Hospital have developed an electronic discharge summary.

The summary utilizes human factors and prompts to optimize patient safety and ensure a very good adherence with Best Practice in Cardiology.

The system has spread to all other specialties at the Hospital. At present there are a total of 31 Best Practices at the Hospital sites.

The summary will, in the near future, become web-based and accessible to more sites in Western Australia.

Report by Stephen Bloomer and Jeff Ewen.
