Workforce Roles - NSW Health

The Redesign Program has resulted in the development and implementation of a number of new roles that support the new models of care.

The new roles outlined below are examples of new workable initiatives that can assist in improving the patient journey particularly in the Emergency Department (ED).

PDF File Emergency Department Physiotherapy Practitioner (414KB)

  • Primary care specialist physiotherapist, based in ED.
  • Provides specialised management for acute soft tissue injuries & bony fracture, seeing patients directly from triage.
  • Ability to investigate, treat & discharge this population of patients.
  • Provides referrals as appropriate to community based health care services.
  • Education role with nursing & medical staff.

PDF File Cardiac Liaison Nurse (428KB)

  • Facilitates optimal management of cardiac patients in the ED.
  • Facilitates rapid access to Exercise Stress Testing (EST) for appropriate patients presenting to ED with chest pain.
  • Facilitates efficient patient flow from the ED to cardiac clinical areas (including CCU, Cardiac Catheter Lab and the cardiology ward).
  • Liaises with patients & their families regarding admission processes & provides information related to admission, diagnostic tests & clinical condition.
  • Provides an educational resource for nursing & medical staff in the ED.

PDF File Ambulance Release Nurse (269KB)

  • Day to day management of patients in the emergency department ambulance bay including ongoing assessment and initiation of treatment from 1000-2130hrs.
  • The role is responsible for guiding the delivery of optimal patient care through collaborative partnerships at the “Front of House”.
  • Assist in controlling arrivals, by triaging in a timely and efficient manner, enhancing performance against mandated KPI’s.
  • Ensuring patient safety for all patients who arrive via ambulance and are required to wait in the ambulance bay for bed availability.

  • Day to day management of all waiting areas in a complex and dynamic level 6 Emergency Department.
  • Guides the delivery of optimal patient care through collaborative partnerships with triage, Clinical Initiative Nurse and Ambulance Release Nurse.
  • Assists in controlling arrivals through queue management, triaging and assessment of patients in the Emergency waiting areas in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Waiting patients and nursing staff have access to a senior nurse with expert knowledge and all aspects of emergency nursing care.

PDF File Emergency Department Nurse Practitioner (282KB)

  • See and treat’ patients with minor injuries or illness.
  • Collaborative patient groups – these are managed with senior ED medical staff
  • ‘Fast tracking’ patient groups.
  • Clinical assessment, diagnostics & therapeutic interventions in line with ED nurse standing orders and the ENP formulary.
  • Determine and identify health risk and initiate crisis interventions as appropriate.
  • Consult and refer to other health care providers within the ED and hospital.
  • Identify patients outside the scope of practice and refer/discuss as appropriate with a senior ED medical officer.
