Abstract
Bankstown Occupational Therapy (OT) Department developed clinical competency checklists to ensure a clear and objective method was used in determining staff skill. Development of these checklists by the whole department fostered team work and valued staff contributions. Clinical competency checklists meant we had an organised, planned and fair process for assessing and ensuring skill level. Their use has modified and guided staff practice. Knowing specific skill levels of staff has assisted the planning and distribution of our workforce into areas of need within the health service; enhancing consumer access and limiting potential effects of staff shortages.
