Abstract

Leeton District Hospital developed a Midwifery training program in partnership with Charles Sturt University Wagga and Griffith/Wagga Base Hospitals to address a critical shortage of midwives in the town. There are now two locally trained midwives on staff with one student currently training.

As a direct result of this initiative, the Leeton Maternity services have developed and progressed to offering new services that are women focused in line with current trends.

The training in Leeton creates midwives who are well prepared to be become Independent Midwife Practitioners. The first student Leeton trained is currently an Independent Midwife Practitioner working in out back Australia.
