Abstract

This service is a collaborative partnership between Greater Western Area Health Service (GWAHS), Maari Ma Aboriginal Health Corporation and the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS). The role of the OD&VHS is to identify health professionals in the remote cluster who have an interest in diabetes prevention and management and would like to further their knowledge through an accredited Diabetes Educators Course.

After successfully completing the course, the expectations for this cohort is to identify the diabetes clients in their communities, register information using Ferret (recall database), organize diabetes clinics, participate in opportunistic screening within their communities and coordinate endocrinology clinics.

Thirteen participants have successfully completed the course since 2003 and are employed to deliver diabetes education in their respective areas.
