Abstract
Falls are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in older people, and preventing falls in older people is both a national and state public health priority . Admissions to hospital for fall related injury, particularly among older people, currently consumes an estimated $342.2 million in health resources each year in NSW .
Reviewed Falls incidents across SHN from July 2005 to June 2006 indicated that falls rates represented 30% (1307) of all clinical incidents, and serious injury from falls (SAC1, SAC 2 incidents) represented 2.2% (28) of all fall related incidents. In response, a SHN Falls Prevention Working Party was established and an evidence based SHN Falls Prevention Business Plan developed, with 70% of the strategies implemented to date.
