Abstract
The NSW Severe Burn Injury Service was concerned that some patients transferred from local hospitals were not receiving optimal care. To better understand this, a two-way feedback process was developed, to guide improvement in the emergency care and transfer process for patients with severe burn injuries.
Over 300 patient feedback forms have been completed, showing that accurate assessment of burns, documentation, fluid resuscitation and delays in transfer were issues.
A follow-up survey to hospitals was sent out to assess the process. This showed issues with documentation and education.
In response the Service developed a Burn Emergency Chart (currently with the DOH for approval) and changed the thematic and geographical cover of its education program.
