Abstract
It is estimated that 25% of Australian carers are parents caring for children with a chronic illness or disability. To support this group The Children’s Hospital at Westmead (CHW) has developed a comprehensive Carer Support Program (CSP). A key component of the CSP was the development of a Parent and Carer Resource Centre (the Centre), aimed at providing information, support and ‘time out’ for parents/carers.
After initial success and much positive feedback the Centre struggled to fully realise its potential and was somewhat underutilised. A concerted expansion of services since then has resulted in a significant improvement in the quality of the services provided through the Centre and increased patronage by parents and carers from a wide range of backgrounds.
