Abstract
People with Diabetes are at greater risk of developing depression than those without Diabetes[1]. Having both disorders impacts the individuals ability to self manage their illness[1, 2], and leads to a significantly greater risk of complications[1, 3]. The MADE-IT Program was developed through a partnership of Health Professionals and Consumers, and addresses both issues in an integrated manner using evidenced based practice. The program is delivered in small groups, weekly for eight weeks. Results on outcome measure shows significant improvement in depression symptoms, psychological distress, problem areas in Diabetes, and improved Diabetes knowledge. Physical measures also show improvement.
A multi-site randomized controlled trial is being rolled out across three NSW Health areas, to evaluate effectiveness in a replication study.
