2009 NSW Aboriginal Health Awards

The NSW Aboriginal Health Awards were established in 2004 and acknowledge the contribution of individuals, government and non-government organisations and communities to the improvement of the health outcomes of Aboriginal people in New South Wales. This involves the delivery of high quality healthcare through programs and dedicated health professionals in urban, rural, regional and remote settings.

  • Beverley Spiers - Justice Health

Beverley has been in the health system since 1985. She collected health data from Aboriginal peoples in prison and doing so in a way that enthuses and inspires participation of the entire Aboriginal population in the gaol, with the likely outcome of increasing their long term participation in their own personal health management.

  • Colleen Cawood - South Eastern Sydney Illawarra Area Health Service
    Colleen is a life-long member of the La Perouse Aboriginal community. Colleen is an outstanding health worker, teacher and role model to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous colleagues.

  • Christine (Tina) Pidcock - Hunter New England Area Health Service
    Tina is nominated for the Gail May Award in recognition of her commitment to reducing health inequality for Aboriginal people particularly through her work in the development of the Integrated Chronic Care Program.

 Hall of Fame Award  Alison Bush

Winner

  • Sister Alison Bush - Sydney South West Area Health Service

Sister Bush was the first Aboriginal Midwife to be based at a major maternity hospital in New South Wales. She has worked tirelessly over the last forty years to improve the health of Aboriginal mums and babies. For eight years she played a leading part, along with other former King George V staff members, in setting up a national maternity health training program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers. Sister Bush has always given leadership with competence and cared for all people with dignity, humour and compassion.

  • Rex Marshall OAM - Rex was the first Aboriginal Mental Health Worker in NSW.  He has contributed 20 years voluntary service to Aboriginal mental health awareness programs and general Aboriginal health.

    Tina is recognised as a passionate advocate for Aboriginal rights and continues to fight to achieve positive outcomes for her community.
